Korea Midland Power has recently been selected as the preferred bidder for a 96 MW

(battery capacity of 576 MWh) BESS project in the “2nd ESS Central Contract Market

Competitive Bidding in 2025” hosted by the Korea Power Exchange.

The bidding was conducted for a total capacity of 540 MW (500 MW on the mainland

and 40 MW in Jeju), making it the largest ESS public tender in Korea. Korea Midland

Power formed a consortium with Topsun and proposed a project to construct an ESS

facility near the Hwawon Substation in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, through which it was

ultimately selected.

The total project cost is approximately KRW 150 billion, and the Engineering, Procurement,

and Construction (EPC) will be undertaken by Topsun.

BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is a facility that stores surplus electricity generated

during periods of high power production and supplies it during times of high demand.

As the share of renewable energy generation in the Jeonnam region has recently increased,

the frequency of output curtailment has also risen. Through this project award, the installation

of the new ESS is expected to help resolve grid instability issues and significantly contribute

to the stabilization of the related transmission network.

Through this project, Topsun has demonstrated its expertise in EPC and established an

opportunity to actively participate in the ESS market going forward.
